(a). The former left a widow and one child resident
in India. I enclose copies of correspondence from which it

would appear that Mrs. Evans is in very straitened circumstances.
I caused a letter, a copy of which is attached, to be addressed
to the Government of India on the subject, and if the statements
made by Mrs. Evans prove correct, I propose subject to your
approval to grant her an allowance of £8 per mensem, the allow-
ance to cease in the event of re-marriage.
(b). L. J. Silva has also left a widow, a woman of
Chinese race, and I propose to grant her an allowance of the
amount of $10 per mensen; the deceased's wages were, I under-
stand, $15 per mensem. The allowance will cease in the event
of re-marriage.
(c). The other member of the guard, Santos da Silva,
was unmarried and without dependents, and no claim has been
made on his behalf.

The non-Chinese survivors amongst the officers
and crew of the ill-fated vessel were Captain Wetherell, McCartney, Chief Engineer, and two Asiatic-Portuguese members
of the guard, Antonio Diaz and Joseph Concepcion, and as they
suffered the loss of all their effects I caused them to be re-
imbursed, after investigation of their claims, in the sums of
